Gentle leg-pulling, comedic satire, and non-fiction written as fiction. Time away from serious subjects for some light entertainment!

Welcome to the Faction page where, from time to time, links will be posted to content written ‘non-fiction as fiction’, in the form of gentle leg pulling and comedic satire.

The Fragile Sea | Room 5000
In 1981, at the age of 23, I wrote this short story on a computer gaining sentience. Not one word has been changed.

Two faction series are being worked on right now:

HIPPI

Zeno Pyth Arisplat is on a life quest to start a worldwide movement based on a personality test.

The Helicotrema Integrated Personality and Presentation Index (HIPPI), is a type of scoring methodology for anything really, from the youngest child's first stand up in front of an audience (with gentle encouragement), to an idea for a home party, an employment interview, or a serious corporate presentation.

We all need HIPPI, it's the Esperanto of personality and content tests, the INFP that unveils the true ISTP in the INTP, the re-imagined mosquito-bitten DNA grown to Jurassic World proportions, a cargo ship of hungry munchers. If you can stand the HIPPI and get a high score, paradise beckons.

WackBards – Idea for a Television Series

“WackBards – Idea for a Television Series”, is about a language professor, Toshi Nokimodo, who manages a team of linguists, comprising two outspoken feminists, Bite, and Bounce, a gentle soul administrator, and a surfer sports addict.

The team is studying a new evolving language called Wackbards, a sort of scrambled English, to elicit new insights into learning and comprehension; it's a fair to middling success or failure so far, depending on how one sees a half-filled glass.

One day, the professor stumbles upon a portal in a tree at the bottom of the garden behind his laboratory, while he is down there sneaking a smoke, where he discovers another world closely resembling our own but somehow scrambled – the connections are intermittent, and the team never fully understands what's going on in the other world beyond the portal opening.

The professor also lives in silent fear of discovery, since Wackbards came from the other world, Thera, and he gained funding based on it being an original idea sprung from his lab.

This series channels Third Rock From The Sun, and takes the form of Animal Farm meets Willy Wonka, with a bit of Lord of the Flies savagery thrown in.

I'm going to need a lot of help with it, so maybe I'll set up the series and then reach out to other writers for a bit of attributed assistance, down the piece a bit, if there is any interest.

Both Faction series are likely to be intermittent, not regularised every two weeks, but popping up every now and then.

I hope you enjoy a bit of light entertainment from time to time! We all need it.

Take care,

-Brent
